We use the print-outs to educate our patients about various health subjects as well as telehealth where the patients can see doctors from the comfort of their home when they are being isolated due to Covid or due to severe weather conditions.

At Betances, we believe that quality health care is a basic human right. Betances was founded in 1970 as a grassroots mobile unit bringing urgently needed medical services to the lower east side's medically indigent and office above a pickle factory on Essex Street, delivering health services from a mobile health unit. Initial services for the homeless and medically indigent including screening, immunizations, family planning, health education, advocacy and referrals. Our pioneering strategy of integrated care merges traditional western medicine and specialty services with holistic treatments that are consonant with diverse health care beliefs and practices. By 1976, the organization had obtained the authorization to operate as a free clinic.

In 1986 Betances Health Center moved to its current location at 280 Henry Street. Today, it has emerged as a leader in community base primary care and remains committed to its mission of promoting quality healthcare as a basic right for all, regardless of ability to pay.

Betances offers a full range of medical, specialty, complementary, and social services to over 5,000 patients annually. Comprehensive Primary Care: Ongoing health maintenance is vital to the control and prevention of disease and chronic illness. Through the practices of Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Pediatrics, and Women’s Care, our multilingual providers work to enhance the total well-being of our patients.

Health Outreach: Betances works closely with many agencies to facilitate access to health care. Through formal contracts or linkage agreements, Betances can provide health services tailored to the needs of clients served by agencies throughout the city.

HIV/AIDS Care: Early detection and intervention can lead to improved quality of life for individuals living with HIV. Through targeted primary care, our providers work closely with their patients to identify the best available treatment options. Social Services are an integral part of HIV/AIDS care.

Behavioral Health & Social Services: Assuring the good mental health of vulnerable patients is central to the promotion of overall wellness. Long and short-term counseling in the areas of crisis intervention, bereavement, substance abuse, and HIV are available to individuals and families.
