Alta Mons is the outdoor ministry of the Roanoke District of the United Methodist Church and located in Shawsville, VA. We are open year round, providing space for others to experience God through our outdoor ministry. We have summer camp and other programs throughout the year for children of all ages, as well as facilities available to rent for family reunions, retreats, or small group meetings. Alta Mons has several challenge courses and a pool available to rent as well. We are a place for people of all ages, nationalities, and backgrounds to come for a retreat with God
Each year, Alta Mons publishes an Impact Report. This 12 page document full of photos and detailed descriptions of our ministry attempts to tell our story of the past year and of our ministry. We use this beautiful resource to connect with donors, board members, camper families, retreat guests, hikers/campground visitors, and other interested parties. Over the course of the year, we also send out postcards to help celebrate camper birthdays, announce events and programs, recruit volunteers, and inform our mailing list of upcoming opportunities to become involved at Alta Mons. It is important to us to utilize e-mail, social media, and print mediums to give our message the best possible chance of reaching our supporters. One of our favorite ways that print media has helped us achieve our mission is by sending summer/winter campers (and staff!) Happy Birthday postcards. Our camp counselors and support staff write these on Friday after our campers leave and we mail them out on Mondays throughout the year. This is a very specific way in which our campers can feel celebrated, loved, and appreciated on their special day!
Each year on the weekend before Christmas, Alta Mons hosts Winter Camp! This 3 day/2 night camp is a great way for the camp community to spend some time together right before Christmas and brings joy to all who are involved. We build a lot of hype for this event by handing out a "save the date" postcard at summer camp check-out to advertise the event. Then we mail out postcards in October to announce that registration is open and to reveal our spiritual theme for Winter Camp. Print media has been very helpful in garnering registrations, interest, excitement, and volunteers for this amazing weekend at camp!
Similar to Winter Camp, we send out postcards to announce our Paul Bunyan Day (volunteer work day in March each year) and the Alta Mons District Cookout (a thank you to our District Churches for their support and a celebration of the summer). We have found a lot of success in these recent "pandemic" years with postcards!
We so appreciate the quality work that Conquest Graphics has done for us over the past 6 years that we have been working with them. Samantha Bonilla has been a wonderful asset to us and we are so very grateful for all of her hard work in helping us create beautiful print media. We have also printed special banners and event invitations with Conquest Graphics and will do so in the future as needed.
