What is a Tuck-End Box?

Tuck-end boxes, also referred to as tuck top boxes, are boxes that have two openings that can either open in the same or opposite direction with one opening on the top and one on the bottom of the box.

Sizes typically range anywhere from 0.75” x 0.75” x 1.75” to 12” x 6” x 12”.

Reverse vs. straight tuck-end boxes.

Types of Tuck-End Boxes

As mentioned above, tuck-end boxes have two openings which can either open in the same direction as each other or opposite.

Tuck-end boxes that open in the same direction are known as straight tuck-end boxes, while ones where the openings open in opposite direction are referred to as reverse tuck-end boxes.

Straight Tuck-End Boxes

Straight Tuck-End Box

Straight tuck-end boxes are the most common type of folded box used for products and other types of packaging. And they are ideal for any industry and a variety of products, including cosmetics, food, soaps, pharmaceuticals, gifts, retail items, and any other item you would like concealed and protected while also promoting your brand.

These types of tuck-end boxes are referred to as straight tuck-end boxes because the way it is printed and cut allows the top and bottom tab to open in the same direction.

Straight tuck-end boxes are also ideal for point of purchase displays or packaging items that will be for sale and viewed on a shelf. This is because when you design your box so the tabs close to the back of the box, and the front panel has your main message, your box has a cleaner design.

Reverse Tuck-End Boxes

Reverse Tuck-End Box

Reverse tuck-end boxes are very similar to straight tuck-end boxes. However, for reverse tuck-end boxes, the top and bottom opening, open in opposite directions rather than the same.

These types of tuck-end boxes are ideal for packaging many different types of items, including essential oils, gifts, electronics, office supplies, apparel, candies, and more. It is recommended, however, that if you are looking to package a product for your retail store, or just looking to have your packaged items displayed on a shelf, that you choose a straight tuck-end box instead. This is so that your box's design has a cleaner look when displayed.

If you choose to still opt for a reverse tuck-end box you may consider designing your box so that the top tab on the top of your box closes to the back of the box.

How Does a Tuck-End Box Work?

For both types of tuck-end boxes, the straight and reverse, the top and bottom lids both have 3 tabs. For each lid opening the two smaller side tabs close in and the larger middle tab closes on top of the side tabs and tucks into the box to secure it.

For straight tuck-end boxes these two, top and bottom, larger middle tabs are printed to fold in the same direction while for the reverse tuck-end box, these tabs are printed to fold in the opposite direction.

Below is an image that demonstrates how each type of tuck-end box is printed and then cut and folded to create the box.

How tuck-end boxes are made.

Tuck-end box designs are printed on to a sheet of paper and then cut out using a die cutter to the desired shape and size as the image above displays. The die then runs along the folded areas, or the areas in orange in the above image, to create a crease.

To assemble the tuck-end box, everything is folded along the crease lines and then glue is applied to the small tab running along the side to secure the box together.

What are Tuck-End Boxes Used for?

Tuck-end boxes are commonly used for packaging products for sale. When you walk into your favorite retail store and grab a tube of toothpaste, a box of tea, or a deck of cards, they are typically packaged in a tuck-end box.

Now imagine walking into that same store and none of the boxes are labeled or they don’t have any branding. You wouldn’t know who you are buying from or even what you are buying. Even worse, imagine if those items didn’t come in a box? There would be tubes of toothpaste rolling around, tea bags that you probably wouldn’t want to drink, and lots of missing cards.

That’s why custom tuck-end boxes are so important for your company. They protect your products and let your audience know who your brand is, while displaying your product in a professional way that increases brand awareness.

Although commonly used for packaging products for sale, tuck-end boxes are also perfect for boxing up gifts or packaging promotional items to hand out at trade shows or events.
